“Not only does it provide comfort, it also helps women practice self-exams and detect lumps early.”
Business Challenge
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women in India, yet only 26% are aware of self-exams and just 18% have performed one. Deep-rooted social taboos and cultural discomfort prevent women from discussing or touching their bodies, leading to late detection and low survival rates. Human Perspective
Indian women often hesitate to speak about or touch their bodies due to cultural norms, especially in rural areas with limited awareness and access. However, there is one moment each month when women prioritize self-care without hesitation—during menstruation, using a hot water bottle for pain relief. This presented a natural, trusted behavior to introduce breast self-exams in a way that feels saf

Social Need
The topic of breast health remains taboo across large parts of India, limiting awareness and early detection. Drawing from Godhna tattoo traditions, symbols of protection passed down among Baiga women, the solution embeds health education within cultural expression. This creates a discreet, respectful, and community-driven way to normalize self-exams and overcome stigma

Lab process
Godhna tattoo patterns were translated into embossed designs on a hot water bottle, each guiding a specific breast self-exam movement. Gynecologists and oncologists validated the process, including the addition of a tactile lump inspired by real mammogram data. The system was designed to align with the optimal post-menstrual window and supported by a microsite, SMS reminders, and workshops.

Innovation outcome
Hug of Life transformed a common menstrual product into a life-saving health device. By combining tactile guidance, cultural symbolism, and timing, the bottle teaches self-exam techniques through use. The addition of embossed patterns and a realistic lump creates an intuitive learning experience, making self-exams accessible, repeatable, and part of a monthly ritual.
